IIS researcher to speak at child protection conference

On 25 October 2022, Kinga Sorbán of the Institute of the Information Society will give a presentation entitled "Harmful, dangerous, forbidden: regulating media content harmful to children in social media" at the conference "The impact of media on children's psychological development".

What does child protection mean in today's digital media environment? How can we understand the relationship between media and children's understanding, psychological and emotional processing at different age stages? What are the limits and constraints of legal regulation? Where are the responsibilities of the different actors? These are the questions to be answered by the joint conference of the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) and the Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC).

Speakers will present the links between children's development and the potential impact of media content, presenting the latest research findings. The presentations will focus on the experience of psychology and psychiatry, but will also include aspects of sociology, communication and media, political science, educational psychology and pedagogy, medicine and health, as well as the possibilities of legal regulation.

The aim of the conference is to provide an insight into the scientific background, the results of which will determine the aspects of child protection in the digital media environment. The starting point for child protection in media regulation is that children are vulnerable to the effects of the media because of their age and therefore need age-appropriate attention and protection. While there is consensus on this assumption, the scientific background on which it is based is poorly understood. The conference, initiated by the Institute for Media Studies of the NMHH, aims primarily to demonstrate the links between children's development and the potential impact of media content.

To this end, outstanding representatives from a range of disciplines will share their ideas with the audience, from psychology to media literacy to the response of European regulators in advertising law.
